Ugandan Tree Bark
The Kireka Collection: Community at the heart
A Symbol of Sustainability & Strength
The Kireka Collection is more than just eyewear—it represents a groundbreaking achievement in sustainable design and a testament to the resilience of a community. It stands as a lifeline for those less fortunate and a reminder that true innovation can be achieved without harming our planet.
Perhaps the most extraordinary part? Not a single tree is cut down.
Our journey to Kireka, Uganda, began through a connection with the charity Meeting Point International. This East African nation has faced political instability, poverty, and health crises like HIV, along with mass atrocities such as kidnappings and executions. Yet, despite these hardships, hope shines brightly in one small part of the country.
In the slums of Kampala, the Acholi women of Kireka, driven by the need to protect and provide for their children, rediscovered an ancient technique—harvesting the bark of the Ficus Natalensis tree to create a unique, sustainable material.
A Timeless Craft with a Sustainable Future
The process is as remarkable as the community itself. The bark is carefully shaved from the tree, then pummeled with wooden mallets in a slow, rhythmic process before being left to harden and dry. Once fully dried, this bark-cloth material becomes durable and versatile—so much so that it has been used as a valuable currency for generations.
Incredibly, the tree regenerates its bark every five years and can be harvested for up to 40 years without harm. After that, it is left to enjoy a peaceful "retirement", continuing to thrive in its natural habitat.
A Collaboration That Creates Change
Moved by this project, FEB31ST joined forces with the Kireka community, purchasing the remarkable material to craft a special edition eyewear collection—one that carries an important story of resilience, sustainability, and empowerment.
Proceeds from this collaboration directly support the community, helping to build schools, provide medical facilities, and secure a brighter future for the children of Kireka.
A Unique Frame with a Powerful Story
Every FEB31ST Kireka Collection frame is available in all shapes and styles yet instantly recognizable by its raw, textured finish—a tactile reminder of its natural origins.
But what makes these frames truly special is the touch of the Kireka community itself. The children of Kireka have personally decorated the bark material, creating vibrant pigmentations by throwing wildflower-dyed paint onto the surface in spontaneous, artistic formations. Hidden within the colours, you may even find a small handprint or footprint, a gentle signature of the children whose future this collection helps to shape.
All this is possible without having to harvest a single tree. As we say in Italy "Un piccolo taglio di capello" - just a little haircut.
