The Vaia Collection: New Beginnings after Nature's Power

In October 2018, the Northern Italian Alps faced an unprecedented storm—one unlike anything seen before. A strong, warm wind tore through the mountains, an unusual force for that time of year, followed by relentless heavy rains. What seemed like a summer storm in the heart of autumn quickly escalated into a hurricane-force disaster, with winds reaching 217 km/h.

By the time the storm subsided, the destruction was immense: • 14 million trees felled • Entire forests stripped bare • Local communities left without resources

It was a tragedy for the landscape and the people who depended on it. But from this devastation, a new opportunity emerged—one that could help restore the forests and support the affected communities.

Transforming Tragedy into Renewal

Recognizing the need to repurpose what nature left behind, FEB31^ST visited the region and took action. Partnering with the Italian branch of the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC), we helped establish a new sustainable supply chain, ensuring that the fallen trees could be ethically repurposed rather than wasted.

From this initiative, the Vaia Collection was born—an eyewear series crafted entirely from the wood of these storm-felled trees, giving them a second life while helping to heal the land they once stood on.

The wood is left raw and untouched where possible, allowing the natural patterns to remain visible, a reminder of nature's power and resilience.
